Let's Talk About the Work
We're not going to pretend this is a sit-in-the-cab-and-steer job. Here's what the physical side looks like — and why the pay is higher because of it.
You'll handle 20–30K lbs per route using dollies and hand trucks we provide. Individual cases typically weigh 30–50 lbs.
The physical demand is exactly why McLane pays $88K–$97K instead of the $50–60K at sit-and-drive carriers.
Drivers who came from OTR say they prefer staying active over sitting in a cab for 11 hours. Many report feeling healthier and less burned out.
Routes are optimized, equipment is provided, and you're home daily to recover — not sleeping at a truck stop.
This job isn't for everyone, and that's okay. But if you're willing to put in the work, the pay and home time are hard to beat.

Hear From McLane Drivers
“I came from OTR and was sick of being away from my kids. McLane gets me home daily. The pay was comparable to what I was making on the road, and I actually get to use my weekends now.”
Marcus D.
CDL-A Driver, Columbus OH
“Yeah, it's physical work. But I'd rather move freight and stay in shape than sit in a cab for 11 hours. The pay is good, the equipment is solid, and I clock out knowing exactly what I earned.”
James W.
CDL-A Driver, Minneapolis MN
“The tuition reimbursement is a real perk most carriers don't offer. After two years, I was clearing $95K. The benefits are legit — Day 1 medical saved me when my daughter needed surgery.”
Roberto S.
CDL-A Driver, Louisville KY

Common Questions From Drivers
McLane drivers earn $88,000 to $97,000 per year. Top drivers earn $100,000+. Pay is component-based (hourly, per mile, per stop, per case), so your earnings grow as you get faster and more experienced. A $3,000 driver referral bonus is also available.
This is a physical job, and we won't sugarcoat it. You'll handle approximately 20,000-30,000 lbs of product per route using dollies and hand trucks provided by McLane. Individual cases range from a few pounds to about 60 lbs. Many drivers view this as a benefit — you stay active, you're not sitting for 11 hours, and the physical demand is a big reason the pay is higher than sit-and-drive carriers. But it's important you know what you're signing up for.
Dispatch times vary based on your route and can range from late evening to early morning. As you gain seniority, you get priority for more consistent, preferred routes. We know unpredictable schedules are a pain point — talk to your recruiter about which routes are available at your location and what times to expect.
You'll drive day cabs with automatic transmissions available, modern safety features, and maintained HVAC. Trailers are multi-temperature with compartments for dry, refrigerated, and frozen freight. All maintenance is handled by McLane — no out-of-pocket costs for you.
McLane offers a $3,000 driver referral bonus. If you're referred by a current McLane driver, you both benefit. Ask your recruiter for details on the referral program at your location.
Medical, dental, and vision insurance all begin on your first day — no waiting period. You also get company-paid life insurance and FSA/HSA options from Day 1. 401(k) Profit Sharing Plan becomes available after 90 days. Route availability depends on your distribution center location. Most McLane DCs offer a mix of local (home daily) and regional routes. As you build seniority, you get first pick of preferred routes. Talk to your recruiter about what's available at the DC nearest you.
